Hey everyone, since I just recently turned 20, I thought why not do a post involving 20 things! I'm going to do a few more of "Top 20s" and such, but for now enjoy this post. These are 20 things I wish I knew about hair before I turned 20!
1.
It's just hair.
Up until January, I refused to get my hair cut. Just a trim was noticeable and I didnt want that. I've cried like a baby over cut hair. But in the end, it grows back. Chop it off ladies! Have fun with it and experiment! I promise it grows back. I did a benefit for Locks of Love and cut 26 inches off a ladies hair. It took 10 years off her face and she LOVED it. Long, one length hair isn't always that flattering or special.
2. Lay off the hot tools.
If someone tells you that you have naturally straight hair, you probably have straight hair.. Dont keep going over the same strand multiple times. I have seen serious breakage from that. Once or twice and then stop. It looks great ,believe me!
3. The quality of your product DOES matter.
As a hair stylist, I am absolutely, positively 100% convinced that the price of salon products are worth it! I promise you that your hair will be grateful! My hair looks and feels better!
4. Scratching your scalp can ruin hair follicles.
Crazy, I know! But totally true. Use the tips of your fingers vs your nails. Using the tips will get blood flowing and stimulate hair growth.
5. Ponytails can cause damage.
Especially really tight ones! Losen that pony or rock the scrunchie;) And be careful when putting your hair up while its wet. Your hair is most fragile when wet.
6. Your natural hair color is pretty too.
Sad truth? I don't even remember my natural hair color, just because I've colored it so many times. Just because everyone else is doing it, you don't have to color your hair. Especially because nobody has that exact, unique color. Don't be afraid to rock that!
7. Embrace your curls (or lack there of)
You always want what you can't have. But those curls are a great way to get our of doing your hair for a day. Or people with straight hair should embrace the fact they don't have uncontrollable frizz. Embrace and love your hair!
8. French braid pigtails are a no-no.
Don't get me wrong, I think they're adorable on girls under 12...but even 12 is pushing it.
9.Every hair doesn't have to be perfect
There is nothing wrong with being a hot mess. Having straight flat hair is not hot, a little mess is a good thing!
10. Get your split ends cut.
Split ends do not make your hair look long. It looks unhealthy, and people really do notice.
11. Make dry shampoo your go-to
I'm not even sure if this stuff existed while I was younger but man do I wish it did!
12. Less is more
With EVERYTHING. Less product, less color. It will all benefit you. Less product makes (like dime size quantities) your hair look nice but not borderline greasy. Less coloring, your hair is going to be healthier!
13. Do not wash your hair every day
All your doing is washing out your hairs natural oils which will not benefit you at all.
14. Stop twirling your hair
If its a habit or out of boredom, it's actually damaging to your hair!
15. Its okay to be different
There's no way in hell I'd have the guts to do the Miley cut, but I honestly wish more girls would. Stop trying to fit in and try to stand out.
16. Stiffer is not better
Gah what was I thinking. Looking back, it looks like I tried gluing my hair down.
17. Bad hair days will happen.
Can't tell you how many times I've had good intentions for good hair and it all turned wrong. Also couldn't tell you how many breakdowns I've had because of it. How pathetic. It's just hair! Grab a cap, headband, ponytail. Something will save you.
18. Perms aren't that awesome.
One time and one time only. I looked like a poodle. Never get a perm with colored hair. Enough said.
19. Stop picking at your split ends.
Stop picking and just get them cut! Picking and pulling only makes them worse.
20. Appreciate what you have.
It may not be the color you want, the length you want, or it doesn't style how you want, but at least you have hair. I had a 9year old girl donate 14inches of her hair and she said all she wanted for Christmas was to make another little girl happy. And if that doesn't melt your heart, you're wrong.
Someone somewhere would die to have hair like you. So consider yourself lucky.
